Edit: they didn't end up having the training wheels they said they had, so after they tooled around for a while they quit. I drove half an hour each way and got treated poorly for nothing.
This is a shop owned and run by bike nerds. (That's a compliment.) These guys know, ride and love bicycles. Good selection of entry to mid level models at competitive prices. They may come across a bit sleepy, but that's cuz they ain't salesmen...they're bike guys. Very capable of doing repairs and maintenance on high end bikes. I'd just say they need to organize the showroom a bit better to show off the inventory.
After getting reacquainted with the shop after so many years, I learned that Gary had also spent time away battling cancer. I’m relieved he beat it and that he’s literally back in the saddle! Now that I’ve moved back in the area, I’d like to learn how my family can participate in awareness / fundraiser events throughout the year (Bike n Gear is one of the business sponsors for these events.) Would love to get my daughter out in her first biking event for a worthy cause!!
He keeps up with latest biking trends with an open ear to market developments and the biking community. And of course he has empathy for customers who are trying to make sense of the 100 new bike standard changes in any given year/month. (Examples include Wheel-sizes, geometry, suspension technology, etc)
Due to Gary’s expertise, his lifetime tune-ups are worth their weight in (pick one: gold, titanium, carbon fiber). I always feel safe and confident riding to my limits after a visit. The other staff, Chris, is very knowledgeable, too and from what I’ve seen, very efficient, energetic, and passionate about biking. Between Gary and Chris, you can be assured that you'll get the best advice and the store will be stocked with the latest Bikes and Gear for your next adventure :)
I can count on getting excellent service from this store. Ever since my first bike purchase, Gary has been my go-to for all things biking – even after nearly 20 years. (I’ll get to more details later in this review). Early on, I remember building my first custom bike there. That experience felt more like a collaborative effort because he kept me informed of pros/cons of certain components and often suggested alternatives if the price/features weren’t in my best interest. I learned a lot. Not just about bikes, but techniques, proper fitting, and of course the diversity of local trail systems for different skill levels.
Great shop and great service! When my bike was stolen last summer I visited a few local bike shops. Bikes N Gear was slightly more expensive than another shop BUT they offer free lifetime (of the bike) service. Chris is extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful as is the owner. I like begin able to support a local business and the shop is also very close to home. I rode over there to drop off my bike for service (and buy a light) and walked home. 2 days later the bike is ready to be picked up.
Very limited selection and the bald guy here is terrible. I bought some training wheels for my kid's bike and these jerks had the nerve to charge an extra $10 for the 12 seconds it takes to install. I wouldn't have paid that except for we were headed to the trail and I didn't have a wrench in my car. They literally take about 30 seconds to do. In short, poor service and a junk store. Just head elsewhere to the many shops around the area. There's a few good ones around that I have been to and liked.
Getting back to the details… Gary has serviced my 20 year old, custom bike. Under normal riding conditions, a 20 year old bike would’ve needed A LOT more than just a tune-up, but since I took a long break from riding and the components miraculously didn't deteriorate, the mechanics checked out and Gary honored the lifetime tune-up promise.
Good bike shop. Really good selection and help
Great service after the sale!!!
